The Commercial port
By type of traffic :
The Port of Calais handles, under the best possible conditions, traffic with demanding, strict, and specialised logistics needs. This is true for cross-channel traffic, but it also is for other categories. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Calais, in its role as an intermediary, invests in quality tools in order to meet the needs of its customers and improve the productivity of stevedoring operations.
New cars
00
New vehicles belonging to the PSA Group bound for the United Kingdom are loaded in Calais, the only port which offers this demanding customer the capacity needed to carry out 2 daily trips to the Thames with its current fleet of car carriers. Much of the surfaces and equipment available in the East dock are dedicated to this task. The vehicles are stored on the port on 15ha quay level for pre-loading, flanked of 3 Ro-Ro linkspan pontoons with a single bridge (T1, T3, T4). The Walon France company, a Gefco group service provider, soon will have a PDI directly on the port.
Sugar
Sugar traffic represents a significant share of the dry bulk handled by the Port of Calais. Products are stored in two silos with a total capacity of 67,000 tonnes, equipped with systems for bagging and loading into the hold.
The North Quay of the Henri Ravisse Basin allows the berthing of ships up to 245 metres in length and with a draught of up to 11.5 metres.
Cables
A facility was built for Alcatel Submarine Networks, which has a manufacturing unit for underwater cables in Calais near the port. It is now possible to load the cables aboard the ships from the factory, via an underground shaft and a specialised linkspan.
Various goods and dry bulk
The various goods and dry bulk at the Port of Calais are processed at 3 docks: the East basin, the back harbour (Paul Devot Quay) and the Carnot basin.
The East basin
The North quay of the basin, 725 metres in length, is dredged to -12 meters. It can accomodate Panamax-type ships up to 245 metres long, an 11.5-metre draught, and no width restriction. The quays are equipped with 4 multi-use cranes with a capacity of 600 tonnes/h and 22 tons at 40 metres. The North quay of this basin is also equipped with 2 silos with a total capacity of 67,000 tons used for storing and processing sugar. The South quay of the basin is equipped with a specialised linkspan for loading underwater cables. This linkspan is fed by an underground shaft directly connecting the quay to the Alcatel Submarine Networks manufacturing unit located in the immediate vicinity of the port.
The inner harbor (Paul Devot quay)
The back harbour has a multi-use quay named "Paul Devot" quay, which accepts ships up to 190 metres long and 9.00 metres in draught, and is equipped with 2 15-tonne cranes.
The Carnot basin
The Carnot basin is located behind a lock and is dedicated to small bulk. Quays : the basin has 1,680 meters of quays dredged to -7.00 meters. Ship size : the lock allows entry into the basin of ships with a maximum 150 metres in length, 19.5 metres in breadth, and 6.4 metres in draught. Access is restricted by the tide times.
Stevedoring: the ships are worked by 4 12-tonne mobile cranes, 2 Liebherr (LHM 150) and 2 Fuchs (MHL 380).
Storage : The basin provides a storage capacity of about 25,100 sq. m.
